Introducing Doctor's Data's Neuro-Biogenic Amine Profiles
providing an assessment of neurotransmitter metabolism

Recently many practitioners who rely on DDI for their functional testing have told us how important the assessment of neurotransmitter synthesis and metabolism is in their practice protocols.  They expressed a great desire to be able to source such testing from DDI given our longstanding reputation for quality and integrity.  We are pleased to be able to respond positively to this challenge by announcing the immediate availability of this important testing.  DDI employs superior technology and techniques to ensure accuracy and precision while providing enhanced reporting and customer support. Urinary neuro-biogenic amines provide insight into a patient's overall ability to synthesize and metabolize neurotransmitters.  Doctor's Data's Neuro-Biogenic Amine Profiles help identify alterations in urinary neurotransmitter status which may be associated with a variety of conditions from metabolic to behavioral disorders.

Value in Clinical Practice
Analysis of urinary neuro-biogenic amines and their metabolites provides a non-invasive assessment of neurotransmitter metabolism.
A review of current scientific literature indicates that neuro-biogenic amine testing may be useful in a variety of areas:

  • Functional testing—Neuro-biogenic amine metabolism may be mediated by catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), monoamine oxidase (MAO), and other enzymes. Test results may provide functional information about these important enzymes.
  • Imbalance identification—Research indicates that urinary neuro-biogenic amine levels may correlate with conditions such as depression and PTSD.
  • Response to therapy—Certain neuro-biogenic amines such as serotonin may be altered by the addition of neurotransmitter precursors such as 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). These changes may be apparent in the urine.
  • Toxicology risk assessment—Changes in urinary serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate levels have been suggested as biomarkers for neurobehavioral toxicology resulting from chemical or environmental exposures.

Doctor's Data offers Urinary Neuro-Biogenic Amine Profiles as a non-invasive way to assess the neurotransmitters essential for normal function.  Our profiles are designed to help you identify therapeutic opportunities to support your patients' health.

Neuro-Biogenic Amines in the Body
Neuro-biogenic amines are produced from essential aromatic amino acids and secreted from pre-synaptic neurons into the synapse between nerve cells to stimulate receptors on postsynaptic neurons. While circulating levels of neuro-biogenic amines and metabolites may have a variety of sources, urinary levels primarily reflect activity of the peripheral and enteric nervous systems. In fact, up to 20 percent of urinary neurotransmitters are estimated to originate in the central nervous system.

By measuring urinary neuro-biogenic amines, we can learn a great deal about a patient's ability to synthesize and metabolize neurotransmitters in the peripheral nervous system and behind the blood-brain barrier.
Neuro-biogenic amine levels may be influenced by diet, age, gender, body mass, kidney function, environmental exposures, infection, and tobacco use, as well as conditions such as metabolic disorders, mood or behavioral disorders, or in rare cases the presence of certain tumors.  As a result, evaluating urinary neuro-biogenic amines may offer increased clarity about a patient's health and functional status.
