Why Measure NADs?

Intensive NAD supplementation and consequent significantly elevated NAD levels are associated with an increased risk of mortality, as they may enhance mechanisms that contribute to heart attacks, strokes and cancer. Furthermore, extremely high NAD levels are correlated with heightened insulin resistance, leading to various metabolic disorders (e.g., type 2 diabetes). NAD levels fluctuate in response to stress, as the body rapidly consumes NAD+ to adapt its physiological functions. This is why depleted NAD+ levels are associated with various conditions, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, obesity, and inflammation. In some cases, low NAD+ levels can also impair the body’s ability to metabolize drugs or respond effectively to treatments due to insufficient cellular energy. To address declined NAD levels, supplementation may be a consideration. Responses to NAD therapy vary among individuals. To mitigate potential complications, it is important to establish patients’ NAD status and continuously monitor their levels throughout the entire therapy.

Importance of the NAD+ and NADH ratio

For the clearest assessment of mitochondrial and metabolic health, it is essential to measure both the reduced and oxidized forms of NAD: NAD+ and NADH. Their ratio indicates whether the mitochondria are functioning properly. Measuring NAD+ alone provides valuable insights, but only tells half the story.
